An Islamic cleric was brutally killed by suspected bandits in Layin Danauta, Kuyello Ward, Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Wednesday, in a fresh escalation of insecurity that has plagued the region.
The deceased, Mallam Bello Abubakar, served as an Assistant Imam at the Izala Mosque in the community. According to local sources, the cleric was attacked and murdered by armed bandits who stormed the area in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving residents in fear.
Mallam Abubakar was widely respected for his role in leading Qur’anic teachings and community prayer sessions, particularly during Ramadan. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the community, with many describing it as a devastating loss.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Abdullah Birnin Gwari expressed deep grief and frustration over the killing, lamenting what he described as the “unchecked violence” in the area. He urged the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to take decisive and immediate action to protect residents.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the brutal murder of our senior scholar,” Abdullah said. “The continued insecurity in our community is unacceptable, and we call on authorities to act with urgency to restore peace and protect the lives of innocent citizens.
The attack comes amid ongoing insecurity in Birnin Gwari and surrounding areas, which have long been targeted by bandit groups involved in kidnappings, killings, and ransom-seeking activities. Local officials confirm that seven other residents of Layin Danauta remain in captivity, having been abducted by the same criminal elements months earlier.
Security experts warn that without sustained and coordinated intervention, such violence could deepen divisions and worsen the humanitarian toll on vulnerable communities in the region.
Kaduna State authorities and the Nigeria Police Force have not yet issued an official response to the incident at the time of preparing this report.
Residents are calling for increased patrols, community policing efforts, and stronger intelligence gathering.
